Kevin Owens is back. After approximately 17 months away from WWE competition, “The Prizefighter” made one of SummerSlam 2026’s biggest surprise returns and immediately fought his way back into the world championship picture.

In April 2025, Owens revealed that a serious neck injury would prevent him from competing in his planned WrestleMania match against Randy Orton.

Neither man needs much encouragement to make a wrestling rivalry feel personal.

That means the eventual championship match may only be half the attraction.

The promos could be warfare.

WWE could have brought Kevin Owens back slowly.

He could have returned in a backstage segment, worked a short television feud or spent several weeks proving that he was physically ready to compete.

Instead, WWE threw him into a match with Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and GUNTHER and asked him to earn a world championship opportunity on his first night back.

He won.

That booking sends a very clear message about how WWE views Owens following his recovery.

Kevin Owens is not back simply to finish out his career.
